The Conductix-Wampfler Rigid Catenary System is a compact, overhead conductor rail that delivers a safe, efficient alternative to third rail and conventional catenary electrification. STI certified and proven across 2,000+ km of global rail networks, it is engineered for tunnels and tight clearances thanks to its small gauge and two low profile heights (80 mm PAC80 and 110 mm PAC110).

Built around an extruded, heat-treated aluminum profile designed to securely clamp a copper contact wire, the system offers a large copper equivalent cross section for increased current carrying capability. This enables longer substation spacing and reduces overheating risk. With 1/10 the number of components compared to conventional catenary, it accelerates installation, simplifies maintenance, and lowers lifetime costs. Reliability is enhanced by no traffic interruption due to contact wire break, as the contact wire remains in the aluminum profile grooves even when fully worn. Contact wire durability and wear life is increased due to no mechanical tension on the copper contact wire. ABS or Polycarbonate covers are available to provide added protection from environmental conditions.

Electrical connections and earthing clamps are attached directly to the bar, while self-centering aluminum joint plates ensure precise alignment of conductor sections. The system supports voltages from 750 V to 25 kV, is adaptable to smaller tunnel gauges, and meets European Standards (Ens.).

Advantages of Rigid Catenary

  • Compact - Reduces civil works costs with an adaptable conductor rail system that’s small enough for use in tight clearance spaces and smaller tunnel gauges.
  • Increased current carrying ability - Conductix-Wampfler’s Rigid Overhead Catenary provides a large copper-equivalent cross-section of over 2200 mm². This provides up to 10 times the current-carrying capacity of common catenary wire systems. This greater conductivity supports short vehicle headways with low voltage drop and without the need for additional feeders.
  • Fewer components - Ensures quicker installation, easier maintenance, and less stock management. The Rigid Catenary System involves one tenth the number of components of a conventional railway catenary.
  • Increased product lifespan - Save money with a rigid overhead catenary system providing longer product life and removing the need for frequent contact wire replacement. Conductix-Wampfler’s Overhead Catenary solution is designed with no mechanical tension on the contact wire.  This significantly increases the life of the copper contact wire.
  • Reliable - Reduce electrical risks and interruptions to service with a reliable choice of railway catenary. The Conductix-Wampfler Rigid Catenary is designed to prevent the contact wire from falling down on the track when completely worn through.

Technical Capabilities of Rigid Catenary

  • Aluminum alloy profile - Choose a catenary system built with quality. The Rigid Catenary System’s aluminum alloy profile is manufactured from an extrusion with heat treatment. The aluminum profiles are available in varying lengths and two heights (80mm PAC80 and 110mm PAC110).
  • Voltage - Supports operating voltages from 750 V to 25 kV.
  • Amperage: up to 4000 A
  • Contact wire: The aluminum profile can accommodate a range of copper contact wire profiles. The copper wire is easily installed in the aluminum body with the use of a contact wire mounting trolley.
  • Joint plate - Rely on the Conductix-Wampfler Rigid Overhead Catenary System to deliver perfect alignment between rail profiles thanks to its self-centering aluminum joint plate.
  • Covers - The Conductix-Wampfler Rigid Overhead Catenary will deliver high performance throughout its long lifespan. The system is available with covers to protect the aluminum profile from environmental conditions such as permanent water leakage.
  • Suspension - The Rigid Overhead Catenary’s aluminum profile is suspended by EN compliant insulated supports and hanger clamps. Our support solutions cover voltages from 750 V to 25 kV and are designed to fit within small clearances  and compact tunnel gauges.
  • Certification - STI certified Conductix-Wampfler’s Rigid Catenary complies with applicable European Standards (ENs).

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What are the main differences between rigid and flexible catenary systems?

Rigid catenary systems use an aluminum conductor rail with integrated contact wire and are ideal for tunnels and space-restricted environments. Flexible catenary systems use messenger and contact wires with tensioning devices and are typically applied in open track and urban environments.

Why is a rigid catenary system preferred in tunnels?

Rigid catenary systems provide compact construction height, stable contact wire positioning, and reduced maintenance, making them ideal for confined spaces and underground installations.

What are the maintenance advantages of rigid catenary systems?

They eliminate mechanical tensioning systems, reduce component wear, and allow easier inspection compared to conventional flexible systems.

Can rigid catenary systems be used for high-traffic metro operations?

Yes. They are particularly well suited for metro systems with short headways/high duty cycles and demanding reliability requirements.

Do you provide engineering and project support services?

Yes. Conductix‑Wampfler provides an end‑to‑end service: design, engineering, testing, installation supervision as well as on‑site training for installation and maintenance.

Can Conductix-Wampfler support retrofit or modernization projects?

Absolutely. We offer tailored solutions for upgrades, component replacement, and network expansion projects.

What information is required to start a technical consultation?

Key inputs include system voltage, operating speed, clearance constraints, structural details of the tunnel or system, environmental conditions, and applicable standards.
